5 Tips to Stay Safe in a Home Fire

This week is National Fire Prevention week. We challenge you to dedicate a few minutes to making sure that your family knows what to do in the event of a fire. Here are 5 tips to stay safe in a home fire to get you started:

1. Make a plan: Identify all possible exits and escape routes that your family could use in the event of an emergency.

2. Test smoke alarms: Don’t forget to test those smoke alarms at least once a month and make sure there are alarms installed in every sleeping room of the house.

3. Have a family meeting: Go over your plan to ensure that everyone in your home understands how to get out and what to do if there is a fire.

4. Establish a meeting spot: It could be a neighbor’s house, a street sign or the stop sign across the street.

5. Practice: Have a fire drill. It may seem silly, but actually going through the motions with your children will help them remember the plan in the event of an actual emergency.
