Counterfeit Electrical Products

Universal Home Experts recently shared an important home safety message, ‘Counterfeit Electrical.’ Here is more information on that topic.

More than one million counterfeit electrical products have been recalled in recent years according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). This is a huge problem with many potential electrical and safety hazards.

Counterfeit electrical products may be hard for Houston homeowners to spot. This is why the ESFI has shared safety tips for all consumers to follow when shopping for electrical products such as extension cords, batteries and power strips. Please take the time to review the tips below:

  • Look for the CSA, UL or ETL-SEMKO certification marks.
  • Beware of bargains that seem too good to be true. The products may be cheap because they are counterfeit or defective.
  • Check the warning label. It should be free of grammatical errors and should not conflict with information found elsewhere on the package.
  • Look for the name and contact information of the manufacturer. If this information is missing, consider purchasing electrical products elsewhere.
  • Avoid no-name products that lack brand affiliation.
  • Be proactive. Organizations such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) provide information about product recalls on their websites.
