The Cost of Remodeling Your Bathroom

There are a lot of things to consider when you decide to remodel a part of your home – especially your bathroom. How much does a basic bathroom remodel cost? What is the average amount of space needed for a toilet? Can pipes be rerouted to another area in the bathroom? Chances are these are questions you may not know the answer to and that’s okay. This is a big change and a big decision to make. We are here to help!

How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost?

The size of your bathroom, the quality of items you are willing to invest in and how much of it you want to do yourself all play a factor in the budget of a remodel. It is always safe to budget for the unexpected. Oftentimes, you will find issues that need to be addressed that you were unaware of before. You’ll want to make sure your budget includes plumbing and electrical “surprises”.

Basic Bathroom Remodel:

A basic bathroom remodel can range anywhere from $3,000 to $12,000. This usually includes replacing fixtures with off-the-shelf materials, adding accessories to a dull area and applying a few quick paint jobs. People who have a relatively new bathroom and are not looking to spend a lot of money on a large remodel usually go down this route.

Mid to Upper-Range Bathroom Remodel:

These are a little pricier because of location, materials, cost of labor and project scope. This type of bathroom remodel can start at $10,000 and go as high as $35,000. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, the average bathroom remodel cost in 2016 was $11,364. Bathroom remodels here in Houston average at a little more than $10,000. These averages include the cost of labor as well.

With a mid to upper-range bathroom remodel, you are wanting better fixtures (like a higher end toilet, a vanity, a new sink, etc.) that are better quality than a “big-box” store. Is there is more room in your budget to make a few more adjustments to your bathroom layout? Perhaps you’ll want to put in a smaller shower to make way for a slightly larger bathtub (or vice versa) or upgrade your countertops to a higher-grade piece of granite, marble or quartz.

You can also make moderate adjustments to your plumbing – like moving the faucets or shower to a different location. If you want to move your toilet, however, that is when it gets pricey. The toilet location could be considered the “tree trunk” of the drainage lines. If you were to relocate the toilet, you must change the showerhead, drain and faucet locations. People usually do a moderate bathroom remodel if they are limited in their bathroom space or plan to sell in the future.

The Ultimate Bathroom Remodel:

This remodel is also known as a full gut job. Everything will be removed and you will have a clear canvas to work with. These types of remodels can range from $30,000 to $100,000-plus. With this major remodel, high-end fixtures can be added and walls to adjacent rooms can be knocked down to create more space. High-end plumbing and custom cabinetry can be used in this budget.

People who opt for a major bathroom remodel are doing so because they want to get their dream bathroom. Sometimes, due to the economy or personal decisions, many people choose not to move from their current home and elect to remodel instead.

Budget Breakdown:

Once you get an idea of what you would like to spend on your bathroom remodel, you can break down your costs for the materials, labor, etc. The National Kitchen and Bath Association has a cost breakdown guide you can follow:

  • Design fees: 4 percent
  • Installation: 20 percent
  • Fixtures: 15 percent
  • Cabinetry and hardware: 16 percent
  • Countertops: 7 percent
