Christmas Tree Safety Tips

We all love our Christmas trees – festive, merry and bright centerpieces in our homes during the holidays. Although they are a Christmas season necessity, it’s easy to forget that they can actually be a fire hazard.

Taking care of your tree isn’t just about keeping it fresh and beautiful. A fresh tree is much less likely to cause a holiday fire disaster. Here are a few tips for taking care of your tree:

  1. Water your tree daily. This should be a no-brainer, but make sure to check the tree’s water supply daily and always replenish it when it starts getting low. Sometimes, there’s water in the base, but it’s not reaching the stump of the tree. Make sure your tree is getting the water it needs.
  2. Extinguish anycandles that may be lit on or around the tree.
  3. Make sure all lights bear the UL mark of safety before stringing them around your tree.
  4. Avoid overloading your circuits! Do not connect more than 3 light strings together. Check your manufacturer instructions for proper use of holiday lights.
  5. Always unplug lights when you are sleeping or away from home. You can also put them on a timer so they don’t stay on 24 hours a day.
  6. Add an aspirin tablet or a few pinches of sugar to the water. It’s an old wives’ tale, but some say this helps the tree last longer.
  7. Always keep trees away from baseboards and heaters; otherwise they’ll dry up.
  8. Get rid of your tree soon after Christmas. Over 1/3 of all Christmas tree fires occur in January when trees are drier than normal. Do not store the tree in your garage, basement, or near the home. Check local listings for Christmas tree recycling programs.
