How to Conserve Water Outdoors | Yard and Landscaping

The summer heat is sticking around, and your yard and garden continue to thirst for water. How do you save water while still keeping your lawn and outdoor plants happy?

Outdoor Water-Saving Tips:

  • Use this guide from wateruseitwisely.com to figure out how much water you need for your landscape.
  • Only water your lawn if the top 2-3 inches are dry. Use a trowel or shovel to determine if your lawn needs watering.
  • Don’t waste water by letting it puddle around plants or trees, or letting your sprinklers water the driveway and sidewalk.
  • Set a timer when watering your landscape. Remember a running hose dispenses about 10 gallons per minute!
  • Water your plants and landscape in the early morning or late night to reduce the rate of evaporation.
  • Look out for WaterSense labels and irrigation controllers.
  • If you have an automatic watering system, learn how to shut it off in instances of malfunction or rain.
  • Water only when necessary. Your plants can die from too much or too little water.
  • Consider getting your water from other sources such as your dehumidifier, captured rainwater, and dish water.
  • Instead of cleaning your porch and sidewalks with water, consider using a broom instead.
