8 Earth Day Energy-Saving Tips

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! Let’s celebrate by making smarter, greener decisions at home. After all, the theme this year is It’s Our Turn to Lead!

Don’t spend any more of your hard-earned money on unnecessary cooling expenses! By completing these spring energy-saving steps, you will experience more comfort, lower utility bills, and high energy savings all spring and summer long. What are you waiting for? Don’t delay, go green today!

8 Earth Day Energy-Saving Tips

  1. If you flipped the switch on your ceiling fan to its winter setting, remember to switch it back to its summer setting.
  2. Close your drapes and/or blinds to block out the sun’s rays. You can even purchase solar screens and thermal curtains to block even more UV rays.
  3. If the weather cools down during the night, take advantage of this free cooling. Just remember to close the windows again and shut the blinds once you wake up. The sun starts early.
  4. Use energy-saving appliances such as ENERGY STAR and WaterSense labeled products.
  5. If your water heater or HVAC system is on its last legs, put some serious consideration into replacing them. Inefficient appliances are the main cause of high energy bills. The upfront costs of these items only account for about 10-15% of the total lifetime costs. You could be paying way more than you should.
  6. Check your water heater temperature setting. If your temperature dial is set to 140 degrees, we recommend lowering it to a safe, but effective 120 degrees. Not only will you save money and energy, but you will also prevent any risk of scalding. This is especially important for households with young ones.
  7. Consider replacing all of your light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs. They have gotten a lot cheaper over the years, and if you are into different colored lighting options, the new HUE lights by Philips are great!
  8. Seal you air ducts with mastic sealant or foil tape (mastic is messier, but more effective; tape looks nicer, but you need a lot of it). Once you do this, the changes will be felt immediately. You will improve the balance of your HVAC system, making it easier for your system to pump out cool air. Stronger air will flow through your vents and registers, less dust will collect in your air ducts and distributed throughout your home, and you can save up to 30-40% off your cooling bill. You should make this project a priority this spring.
